THE FOUNDERS FUND

With much pride and gratitude, the Garden Club of Nashville accepted the Founders Fund Award in 1983. The Garden Club of America’s Founders Fund Award was given to GCN to establish a center in the Howe Garden for the Propagation and Distribution of Endangered Species. The success of this center has provided members of GCN the opportunity to be dedicated conservationists and guardians of our natural resources.

The logo for the Garden Club of Nashville is a drawing by one of our members of the wooden garden gate that hung at the entrance of Mrs. Harry Howe’s garden, “Wildings,” on Greenwood Avenue in East Nashville. The original gate was flanked by stone gateposts bearing the inscription, “Through this wide open gate, none come too early; none come too late.” A reproduction of the original gate now graces the Howe Garden at Cheekwood and beckons visitors to wander beyond its threshold and into the garden. The words that accompany our logo, “Through the Garden Gate,” provide the title of our monthly newsletter and a hint of where most of our members choose to spend as much time as possible.
